With and Against Cinema

[Editors of Internationale situationniste 1], “With and Against Cinema,” Grey Room 52 (Summer 2013): 19–21. (doi:10.1162/GREYa00113)
First published in Internationale situationniste’s inaugural issue of June 1958, “With and Against Cinema” introduces and effectively names the contested place of cinema in Situationist activities. Claiming a centrality of cinema to the modern condition, the essay gestures to its revolutionary potential. But, in the text’s very brevity, “With and Against Cinema” also signals the fraught and fragmentary trajectory of filmic work subsequently produced by the Situationists. The text is published in English here for the first time, translated by Jason E. Smith.
